Merry Christmas from RUGwell

Our final meeting of the year is now behind us. Thanks again to ProductSpec for once again putting on a fitting end of year break up.

Thanks also to our speakers;

Jason Howden for a very interesting and inspiring Christchurch Justice Precinct case study, its good to know what can be achieved here and now.

Michael Warwick for an equally interesting and very useful presentation about Revit data corruption.

We are always keen to hear a new perspective on things Revit and BIM. So if you’d like to boost your industry reputation and practice your technical presentation skills in a low impact environment, feel free to volunteer.

There is no level of experience requirement as we like to have presentations aimed at various levels, and your RUGwell committee is happy to help out with topic suggestions from our list.

Announcement; RUGwell becomes a Collaborate affiliate.

RUGwell is excited to announce that we are now participating as a Collaborate affiliate group member! RUGwell have long been of the view that BIM groups should be working together, sharing information, not operating in isolated silos (sound familiar?). Collaborate have provided that framework.

How will this affect us?

RUGwell is still an independent local user group, self governed by its members via an organising committee.

Affiliating with Collaborate provides us with access to resources, ideas, and hopefully speakers from the other affiliates. In return we will share information & ideas on behalf of the group.

We will always ask before speaking on your behalf.

We will never share, sell, or otherwise distribute our email list.

Special BIM Event!

October 5, 2015

This month we will be meeting at Wellington City Council for a special BIM event.

The topic at hand will be;

Collaboration with IFC.

We will kick off with some presentations around this theme, including how Wellington City Council are using IFC, and finish with a Q&A time.

We will have visiting & local experts present, so bring your curly questions.

We hope to get a good turn out from users of various software platforms, in addition to our usual Revit people. So spread the word and encourage your contacts to take advantage of this opportunity to learn how to work more effectively together.

Dynamo 101

A must-know for all Revit users! Chris will introduce us to the basics of Dynamo node-based programming, with the goal of providing a foundation of knowledge that will allow us to get started with creating our own simple dynamo tools and take advantage of the thriving Dynamo community.

Case Study: Parametric Cocoon
Following the Dynamo presentation, Chris will highlight the possibilities of node-based programming by breaking down the process of designing, documenting and CNC fabricating Productspec’s crazy BuildNZ exhibition stand using Revit, Rhino, & Grasshopper.

Note, the actual 6m x 3m parametric cocoon will also be on display at the Productspec studio.

Wellington BIM Unconference

Hi everyone,

Your committee has been discussing the idea of holding BIM “Unconference” in the second half of 2015 & would like some feedback as to whether this is a good idea.

An unconference works on the theory that the networking and discussions that take place out of class time can be as valuable as the structured presentations & should therefore be brought front and centre. Each session is a lightly facilitated themed discussion – with documented output. Ideally the output would be a proposed solution to a problem, suggested common work practices, and such like. The output from all sessions is shared with all registered participants at the end of the conference.

Typically at an unconference, the agenda is created by the attendees at the beginning of the meeting. Anyone who wants to initiate a discussion on a topic can claim a time and a space. Unconferences typically feature open discussions rather than having a single speaker at the front of the room giving a talk, although any format is permitted. This form of conference is particularly useful when the attendees generally have a high level of expertise or knowledge in the field the conference convenes to discuss.

Here are some thoughts from me about how the Wellington BIM Unconference might work.

We are completely open to suggestions and alternatives at this stage.

When;

A single week day around August/September.

Format;

All participants would need to attend an early (breakfast?) session in order to set the agenda and session times. This would be done using Open Space Technology principles (see the link above). Participants could then assign themselves to some, all, or no sessions as they see fit. Local participants can then go to work if they wish, returning only for those sessions they see value in attending.

Target Audience;

Primarily focused on the greater Wellington region, although participants from further afield would be welcome to bring their expertise. We hope to reach beyond our core RUGWell attendees and attract users of other softwares, along with people who work (or wrestle) with BIM outside of the design office. This could include contractors, sub-contractors, facilities managers, and property owners.

Ideally we will get the whole supply chain, from concept to operation, talking about how we can work together to use BIM effectively in our local market.

Agenda;

The topics discussed will ultimately be decided on the day feel free to suggest some potential topics in the comments to get people thinking.

Cost;

We aim to run each RUGWell meeting as a stand alone cost neutral event, and would hope to to do the same with a Wellington BIM Unconference. Each session would either be free, or have a small venue charge. Please let us know what you think of this. Also, would you be prepared to pay to have the opening session at a nice breakfast venue?

In order to keep cost to a minimum we would likely accept sponsorship, feel free to contact your favorite committee member (or me) to discuss this further.

Final comment;

How many times did I say participant? The key to a successful unconference is participation!
